When I was pregnant with my 3rd baby, I had SERIOUS cereal cravings. It seemed to be the only food that didn’t make me feel ill. I would have a big bowl for breakfast, another bowl before bed, and another whenever I felt “snacky.” Sadly, my cereal craving was always for something highly processed and very sugary, specifically Cocoa Puffs. Yes. I was unfortunately cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.
The irony of the situation is that I wouldn’t allow my other 2 children (then 1 and 3 years old) to have ANY of the cereal. I knew there was nothing nutritious about it, beyond the synthetic vitamins added, so I refused to give them any. My crazy pregnancy hormones somehow justified my secret cereal habit and I kept boxes stashed in the back of the cupboard where the kids couldn’t reach it. Fast forward to today, and the mere thought of eating a bowl of cereal with white, refined SUGAR listed as the first ingredient makes my teeth ache! Health is a journey, people.
If I had only known the magic that is Banana Mylk 3 years ago…
Banana Mylk is a wonderfully easy DIY nut-free milk replacement. It takes any cereal from bland to sweet, creamy, deliciousness. While unsweetened almond or coconut milk are great in sweetened cereals, Banana Mylk is perfect for plain whole grain cereals—you know, the ones nutritionists are always recommending like Uncle Sam Cereal. We know the wonders that the fiber in these whole grain cereals can do for our blood sugar, cholesterol, and digestive/bowel health, but they can be a little dull on their own (mostly because we are all so used to super sugary processed cereals like the aforementioned Cocoa Puffs). Banana Mylk makes getting more of these whole grain cereals in our diet a breeze without any refined sugar.
The only down side to Banana Mylk is that it oxidizes and separates fairly quickly, so you’ll need to make this fresh each time. It takes all of 1 minute to toss in the blender, so it’s really no more trouble then opening a carton of milk anyway. It’s totally worth it.
